XARION Laser Acoustics is a provider of unique, laser-based acoustic sensors. The membrane-free optical microphone uses an IP-protected principle of operation: it detects sound based on its ability to change the speed of light. Since no mechanically movable or deformable parts are involved in this approach, the sensor comes with a linear frequency response free from mechanical resonances. The microphone shows an unprecedented frequency bandwidth exceeding state of the art solutions by a factor of ten.

Membrane-free Optical Microphone

XARION's Optical Microphone enables a novel real-time process control approach. As a complementary solution to visual inspection, the sensor monitors processes via air-coupled ultrasound, contact-free.

Features:

  • Membrane-free optical microphone
  • Low self-noise level
  • Frequency range: 10 Hz–2 MHz (acoustics and ultrasound)
  • Dynamic range: 30–180 dB (A) SPL

Typical applications to monitor in the field of laser material processing are:

  • Laser Welding
  • Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF)
  • Laser Material Deposition (LMD – powder or wire based)
  • Extreme high-speed laser material deposition (EHLA)
  • Laser Cladding
  • Laser Texturing or Structuring
  • Laser Micromachining
  • Laser Glass Processing

Further technical articles have been published about the following applications:

  • Laser welding: Download
  • Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) for detection of hot cracks during and after the build process: Download

XARION's Optical Microphone can also be used for any other process in your production. Especially if you run into any limits with thermal, camera-based, optical, mechanical or any other monitoring technology, the acoustic most likely can help. See here a simple but very impressive demonstration:

Laser Ultrasound NDT Scanner

XARION’s Laser Ultrasound Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Scanning System is a versatile and easy to operate turn-key solution for a wide range of non-contact NDT applications. The large scanning area allows for a variety of sample geometries and materials to be mounted and inspected. The acoustic signal is generated with XARION’s patented thermoacoustic or laser-based excitation technology. XARION’s proprietary Optical Microphone detects the acoustic signal transmitted or reflected from the sample, without the use of contact fluid. Through-transmission as well as single-sided (pitch-catch) measurements can be performed, allowing the detection of internal defects, delamination or porosity in a contact-free manner. The compact and rugged design suits operation in R&D laboratories as well as production environments. For time-sensitive applications, XARION also offers an eight-channel microphone array system.

Features

  • Turn-key NDT system, including robotics and software
  • Compatible with optical microphone and laser or thermoacoustic excitation
  • One or eight-channel system
  • A-, B-, C- & D-scans
  • Sampling: 25 MHz/14 bit
  • Step size from 0.01 to 5mm, scan rate up to 1600 measurements per second
  • Spectral analysis, patented coded excitation
  • Easy result image export in BMP format
  • Raw data export in CSV format
