Laser beam joining is one of the main applications in the use of industrial lasers. In this case, the energy introduced by the laser radiation is caused to melt the material, almost evaporated, in order to change properties or to connect materials with one another. Due to their good focus and high flexibility, laser joining processes can be easily automated with the highest precision. Laser joining is divided into the categories of welding (thermal conduction, depth and laser hybrid welding), welding of thermoplastics, soldering and micro welding. There is also a division into point, seam and direct welding processes. The general advantages of laser joining are mainly the processing of a wide range of materials, with the minimum of thermal influence zones, in processing quality and speed as well as reproducible process monitoring.
